Account Recover
Ontello provides a secure recovery method.
If you lose your device and can’t access your iCloud or Google keychain backup, you can recover your account using a Recover Phrase (12 English words) on a new device.
Recover Phrase (12 Words)
What is recover phrase:
A set of 12 English words generated inside Ontello, used only within the app to derive a Recovery Phrase, allowing you to regain wallet ownership.
Purpose:
If your original device is unavailable and your passkey cannot be synced via iCloud or Google, you can use it on a new device to authorize a new Passkey (owner) onchain.
Limitations:
This Recover Phrase is internal to Ontello — unlike a traditional seed phrase used to import EOAs. It’s designed to restore wallet control, not to import an address into other wallets.
Security Tips:
Save it offline (on paper or notebook), do not screenshot or store it online. It can only be viewed once; if exposed, rotate immediately by removing the old recovery key and generating a new phrase.
Generate Recover Phrase
Go to Settings → Wallet → Generate to enter the Generate Recover Phrase flow.
After securely noting down your Recover Phrase, click Add. This step registers the recovery key onchain. Make sure to wait until the on-chain registration is successful before closing the window, otherwise your Recovery Phrase may not take effect.
Fee Note: his process requires a small on-chain gas fee. If gas sponsorship is enabled, Ontello will attempt to cover it; otherwise, you’ll need a small amount of ONG (on Ontology EVM or Ontology) as the gas token.
Recover Your Account
On the login/register page, find Recover Account.
Enter your username and 12-word Recover Phrase in the correct order. Create a new Passkey on your current device to regain wallet ownership.
After submission, you’ll need to return to the login page and sign in again using your username and new passkey.
After recovery, it’s recommended to remove old or lost Passkeys.
You can add multiple Passkeys (devices) to the same wallet, each registered on-chain as an owner.
Frequently Asked Questions about Recover Phrase
Q: Is the Recover Phrase the same as a seed phrase?
No. The Recover Phrase is an internal Ontello mechanism that derives a Recovery Key when iCloud/Google sync is unavailable. A traditional seed phrase imports an EOA into any wallet. In Ontello, the 12 words act as a backup key to regain control.
Q: What if my Recover Phrase is leaked?
Immediately perform a recovery and rotation:
Use the Recover Phrase to regain control;
Remove the old recovery key;
Generate a new Recover Phrase and store it offline securely.
